My Unemployment Checklist – First Steps

Your unemployment may be a brief if you focus and organize your job search. Consider your strengths and weaknesses in the following job search tasks. Read up on how to improve each area. Make checklists of what you need to do. This list is a start.

  • I am able to research my occupation
  • I can list all local employers in my field
  • I talk to friends and contacts about my job search
  • I can answer dozens of potential interview questions
  • I have a great resume without errors
  • I know how to customize my resume
  • I have a “master” resume
  • I have a basic cover letter I use for customization
  • I have a “contacts list” related to my job search
  • I have names, addresses, tel #s, email for several professional references
  • My job search is organized. I use forms, folders, checklists.
  • I have registered with my state’s employment service
  • I check job vacancies daily on the internet.
  • I know exactly where to look on the library shelf for career books (resumes, interviewing, etc.)
  • I have uploaded my resume to sites such as CareerBuilder or employer’s website
  • I am considering part-time or volunteer work while I continue my job search\
  • I maintain a positive attitude. I have value.
  • I have asked my librarian about the LearningExpress online tutor or other free online training that can improve my skills.
  • I have asked my librarian about their ReferenceUSA database to search all employers in my area.
