The Hidden Job Market (you keep ignoring)

Most job seekers search for job openings posted on their state’s employment website. Granted, most job vacancies end up there. However, a large minority of jobs are filled via the hidden job market. Here’s one example.

A young man had no luck finding a job. He decided to pray about it. He went to church. While in church waiting for the service to begin, another young man and woman sat down next to him. After the service, the unemployed man talked to the man next to him about his job search struggles. He quickly found out that this new acquaintance owned a defense contractor business worth millions of dollars. He was invited for a job interview and was hired immediately. Keep this in mind because there are many examples of this hidden path to employment.

Another aspect of a hidden job is when a job title does not represent the actual job. How many IT professionals would apply for a job titled “computer operator?” Computer operator indicates a keyboard puncher or data input clerk. IT pros apply for jobs titled: System Administrator, Network Engineer, Systems Analyst, etc. However, in some situations Computer Operator can turn out to be “Systems Administrator” with the appropriate pay. So some jobs are hidden by poor or misleading job titles.

Other jobs may be hidden to the average job seeker because they are not listed on the state’s job database. Instead, they might be listed in proprietary websites, such as Remote Writing Jobs or Sage Trucking Jobs, etc.
